After last year’s Valentine’s pack and Anti-Valentine’s pack, I feel like I’m out of blog post ideas. Love, you know? It’s pretty cool, I guess. Hearts. Cupids. Crass commercialism. Fortunately, our authors have much more to say about it than I do, with three bona fide love songs in this year’s Valentine’s pack, and four more singles with varying degrees of Valentine-ness. As is often the case, there’s something for everyone, so pick your favorites and go to town!

Authors’ comments for this week’s songs:

  • “Only Shallow” – Bearz says, “This song has a riff that’s heavy and noisy, yet ethereal and dreamy. The instrument parts aren’t challenging but have enough variation to keep them interesting. The vocal part is also quite soothing.”
  • “Memories (Boss)” – NL says, “Ho/Po filled Guitar, crazy Drums, riffy Bass and orchestral Keys makes this a fun challenge to try and overcome.”

See you next Friday!

  • Basshunter – “Beer in the Bar” (Arcanon)
  • Cheap Trick – “The Flame” (DoNotPassGo feat. farottone)
  • Chris Isaak – “Wicked Game” (farottone)
  • Haken – “Celestial Elixir” 2x (BearzUnlimited)
  • Tera Melos – “A Spoonful of Slurry” M (GanonMetroid feat. AddyMilldike)

A red X denotes Pro Guitar/Pro Bass charts, a blue M denotes full multitracks, a blue K denotes a “karaoke” multitrack (separated vocals), and a rusty 2x denotes that a 2x Bass Pedal version is also available. FtV denotes a song previously released by a C3 author outside of C3.

Been a while since we’ve had a purely singles week! These are some of the most exciting weeks, in my opinion; there’s almost always something for everyone. This week has a ton of genres from a ton of authors, including a fresh face in DoNotPassGo, whose name you might recognize from the forums. We expect great stuff from DNPG in the future! (No pressure.)

Authors’ comments for this week’s songs:

  • “Beer in the Bar” – Arcanon writes, “Well, I’ve done it. Broke my multitrack streak. But this song is too awesome to not bring to you. The synth is catchy, and the lyrics are half party-song, half ‘I do music how I want to and how I like it, deal with it.’ A good reminder that sometimes songs can be fun and entertaining rather than deep and meaningful, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
  • “The Flame” – farottone writes, “Great power ballad, solid guitar, awesome to sing along, this is DoNotPassGo’s first custom going through C3 so yay! :)”
  • “Celestial Elixir” – Bearz writes, “This epic from recent prog band Haken goes from a soft vocal-driven ballad to demented circus metal. The guitar and keys parts will give players a real workout in some sections. Meanwhile, the bass and drums are technical, but not relentlessly difficult. The powerful, soaring vocals are great to sing as well.”
  • “Tera Melos” – GanonMetroid writes, “This is a fan favorite of a seminal math rock band, this particular song is from the band’s early instrumental period. The drum and guitar work on all of their releases has been insane, and this is no exception.”

Fixes uploaded in the last week to previous C3 releases:

  • Closure in Moscow – “Kissing Cousins”: Fixed broken disco flip on drums, fixed drum animations and lip sync
  • Fort Minor – “Remember the Name”: Small changes to reductions (Easy/Hard) on Keys and Pro Keys
  • Mystakin – “Cherish”: Fixed broken disco flip on drums

See you next Friday!

  • Broken Equilibrium – “Etchings” 2x M
  • Broken Equilibrium – “Separation” 2x M

Outside of last year’s anniversary blowout, it’s rare to see a week where every last song is a full multitrack, but here we are! Courtesy of RBN veteran Arcanon, this week sees us diving into collaborations and entries in Wikipedia’s “associated acts” table. You’ve probably heard of Linkin Park, but some might recognize Fort Minor as a side project of the band’s rapper, Mike Shinoda; and Broken Equilibrium and Filtered by the Sky are both…well, here, let’s let Arcanon explain it:

Good morning plastic rockers! It looks like I’ve got this week all to myself. (Well, almost. Thanks Pearlized Pistol for your help on one of this week’s tracks!) This is quite a new experience. This week I’ve got two packs of songs for you that are quite special to me for various reasons, and both feature bands with shared members.

First, I’ve got a Linkin Park/Fort Minor three-pack for you guys! Linkin Park may be no strangers to Rock Band, but Mike Shinoda’s side project Fort Minor is making its debut today! All three songs feature Shinoda’s excellent rapping, and are all songs I’ve personally wanted to see released on Rock Band for a long time. “Bleed It Out,” which you may recognize from Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, is one of the few songs off of Minutes to Midnight that kept the rap-rock style fans remembered from their previous albums, and is just filled to the top with pure energy. “A Light That Never Comes” off of Recharged, on the other hand, is a significant departure from that style that sees the band embracing a very electronic sound. In my opinion, they really pulled it off in this song, and by doing so they’ve given me a sweet dubstep bass solo to work with. It may be different from what I’m used to, but it does sound awesome. Finally, “Remember the Name” is the second single off of Fort Minor’s debut album The Rising Tied, which showcases Shinoda’s rapping skills alongside that of the guys from Styles of Beyond, who have collaborated frequently with Fort Minor. It’s the first Fort Minor song I ever heard, and it led to me buying the album, which I highly recommend. Lots of great talent on that record, and very meaningful songs too. All three songs are very well known, and if you haven’t somehow heard of them before, you’re in for a treat this week!

For my other pack, I am bringing you three songs from Broken Equilibrium’s debut self-titled album and two from Filtered by the Sky’s self-titled debut, all which very nearly made it onto RBN! Broken Equilibrium was the very first band that trusted Chart Toppers Authoring with releasing songs on Rock Band Network back when we were still getting our feet wet and I’ve always been forever thankful to them for that. We released “Epitome of Misery” and “November” on RBN, and later “Culling the Weak” after Rock Band 3 came out. They appear to have a bit of a reputation for releasing songs with easy double-bass charts to practice on, and I’m going to shatter that right now. “Devour” and “Etchings” are intense songs with heavy drum work and fast-paced instrumentation, much more difficult than anything seen by them before. “Etchings” has one of the sweetest bass solos I’ve ever heard, so bassists will LOVE that. (Two bass solos in one week? WHAT?) “Separation” is more similar to “November” in that it’s one of the slower songs off the album, but it is very fun to sing and the drums are no bore either!

Broken Equilibrium is long broken up, but two of their members (one of whom is still with the band) went on to form Filtered by the Sky, which boasts quite a different sound. Former vocalist and band founder Courtney has an enchanting voice that powers these two songs. On “Last Goodbye,” she is the driving force for the song, with former vocalist/cellist (and former Broken Equilibrium member) TJ making a short cameo. On “Where You Are,” the two perform a full-on duet. Vocalists will absolutely love these songs, and Rock Band could always do with more female fronted bands/songs.

Oh, and the best part? Everything has multitracks. Yay multitracks!

This week should have a little something for everyone. I hope you all enjoy these songs as much as I’ve enjoyed working on them.

We’ve also got a buttload of Rock Band Harmonies Project upgrades today, with 20 new harmony upgrades and 31 RBN1 Pro Drums fixes! Harmonies include ALL of the AC/DC Track Pack and the amazing Talking Heads 01, along with several others, so check it out! The full list of upgrades is at the end of this post, and you can download them at the RBHP website.

Also, as a side note, Dailymotion embeds work again! Yay.

See you next Friday!

Sir James Paul McCartney, one of music’s most influential figures, is probably a safe bet for a megapack release, right? Right. I mean, we could do a ten-pack of Hatebeak, but I think you’d prefer this. Wouldn’t you? Wait, really? There’s no accounting for taste, I suppose.

This week’s release covers some of the legend’s greatest solo hits from the midpoint of his career, after Wings but before today. These ten songs from Flowers in the Dirt, Off the Ground, and Flaming Pie span eight years and all five instruments, and are sure hits for Beatles fans, solo McCartney fans, and everyone else. We’ve also got four songs from RBN artist Winter Crescent, to finish off the Battle of Egos album (whose first three songs are still available in the 360’s Music Store). Prog-alicious!

Authors’ comments for this week’s songs:

  • Paul McCartney C01 – farottone writes, “This pack is composed of songs from 3 McCartney albums that are very dear to me and my wife, the 3 studio album released between 1989 and 1997.Flowers in the Dirt is in fact the first album I ever owned on CD, my dad bought it for me on a business trip. It’s a great album with very diverse tracks, including the light jazz/fusion infused Rough Ride and the most popular hit My Brave Face. There’s plenty of reasons to play songs off this album, including a good sax part in Rough Ride and solid guitar in We Got Married.Off the Ground offers Hope of Deliverance and Biker Like an Icon. The former is a cool song to sing along, and Biker Like an Icon is actually a very good song for guitar players who want not necessarily a challenge but a great part to play. The 170 BPM drums should prove compelling for people who like a fast pace.Flaming Pie is a very organic album with a great sound and very, very diverse songs. If You Wanna is just great for guitar players with a lot of mini solos. Souvenir is a great song to sing, reminiscent in some way of She’s So Heavy. The Song We Were Singing is a cool “campfire” song that makes for easy singalongs. Beautiful Night features a very good guitar solo and some engaging drums when the song switches pace.

Considering that these albums didn’t carry many of the classic songs that made McCartney famous it wouldn’t surprise me if not many people knew them but they make for a good Rock Band experience and they also remind us that there are great McCartney songs in the Rock Band music store that just received new life from Harmonix

    .“

  • Battle of Egos tracks – Arcanon writes, “There will be a waning crescent moon tonight and this weekend, and it’s winter, so this is the perfect album to play! Winter Crescent is one of the heaviest prog metal bands to come from Greece. They love their music as much as they love their fans. They really wanted to share their entire album through RBN, so they were more than happy to let the songs that didn’t make it come out through C3! If you like these songs and you have an Xbox 360, go to the RBN store and buy ‘Battle of Egos Intro,’ ‘Battle of Egos Part I’ and ‘Battle of Egos Part II’ to complete the album!“

See you next Friday!

Harmonix releases official DLC for the first time in 21 months!

Welcome back, Miss American Pie! In a move from out of left field, Harmonix announced yesterday that three new tracks would be coming to the Rock Band music store today, January 13. In case you somehow haven’t seen this news exploding all over the Internet, those tracks are:

  • Arctic Monkeys – “R U Mine?”
  • Avenged Sevenfold – “Shepherd of Fire”
  • Foo Fighters – “Something From Nothing” (Buy for Xbox 360)

Go buy these songs and play them! Our mission at C3 has always been to keep players’ interest in the Rock Band franchise alive, and buying brand-new RB3 DLC is the best possible way to do this. By buying these songs, you’re directly demonstrating your interest in the game to Harmonix, and increasing the odds of future Rock Band content.

Can I buy these new songs and still play customs?
Absolutely! You have two options. For most people, the easiest way is simply to buy the songs from the Xbox Marketplace via your 360’s dashboard, then load up RB3 for customs as normal. It will recognize and load the songs with no issues. If you maintain a TU5 environment on a flash drive or similar (in order to play online, for example), you can also load up RB3 in TU5 and download the songs in-game. The only thing you can’t do is buy them in-game in TU4, because it won’t connect you to Xbox Live.

What does this mean for C3 releases?
Harmonix confirmed on yesterday’s livestream that restoring weekly DLC is not yet in the works, so C3 will continue our weekly customs releases for the foreseeable future. Any C3 songs officially released by Harmonix will immediately be removed from our database, and we’ll be requiring that community customs on our forums follow the same rule.

Will you stop releasing songs through C3 if weekly DLC ramps back up?
We’re discussing this, but it seems unlikely right now. We’ll make a decision if and when we get several weeks of Harmonix DLC in a row.

Will C3 releases continue to support Keys and Pro Keys?
This batch of Harmonix DLC does not include Keys/PK parts for at least one song with a keyboard stem, but we will continue to include Keys/PK in C3 releases whenever possible.

Welcome to 2015! We decided to start this year off with a bang — well, let’s say lots of bangs, backed by layered instrumentation in unusual time signatures. It’s a prog metal 4-pack! We’ve also got the often-requested CKY single “96 Quite Bitter Beings”, more Offspring, and RBN/ScoreHero darling Mystakin.

We’ve also got 20 brand-new Rock Band Harmonies Project upgrades from the incredibly hard-working espher, including the PAX pack, MTV2 01, Tom Petty, Jimi Hendrix, and Judas Priest. espher marches ever forward towards the bright future of a fully harmonized back catalog! Check the full list of songs at the end of this post, and visit the RBHP website to download these upgrades.

Authors’ comments for this week’s songs:

  • “Sun of Nothing” – Bearz says, “This song features both technical metal sections and beautiful melodic parts. Guitar, bass, and drums all have very challenging parts and rarely play the same riff/rhythm for long.”
  • “Monument” – farottone says, “A great prog metal composition with the usual entertaining Mark Zonder’s drumming, with a very complex bass riff and one electric guitar and one acoustic guitar solo. The rhythm version not only adds rhythm guitar to keys but shift the overlapping acoustic guitar solo to keys too for a full experience. In my mind, the best way to introduce Fates Warning to the Rock Band platform.”
  • “Bleak” – Bearz says, “This song features a heavy contrast between loud, growling metal and soft acoustic breaks with harmonizing vocals. Guitar, bass, and drums all have varied and interesting parts.”
  • “Lateralus” – Bearz says, “This Tool fan-favorite will take drummers all over their kit with lots of fills and shifting time signatures. Guitarists and bassists both get some cool riffs throughout the song, and vocalists have a unique and challenging part as well.”
  • Quest for Purpose – Arcanon writes, “Mystakin is a one-man band who makes guitar-driven prog instrumentals. He’s also a former RBN author, having worked on many songs for the authoring group Rhythm Authors. He has also authored his own music, making five of his songs (including his The End of Progress EP) available for sale in the Rock Band store. He has co-hosted the Rhythm Authors, Heel Turn and Echo Chamber podcasts as well, with Echo Chamber being his current regular hangout. These three songs, off of his latest EP Quest for Purpose, were meant to come to RBN but did not make it in time. Mystakin has graciously handed them over to me in their near-finished state to complete and release through C3. Grab them and enjoy some instrumental goodness.”
  • “96 Quite Bitter Beings” – NL says, “A Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater classic with possibly the greatest riff ever recorded, great full band fun.”

Fixes uploaded in the last week to previous C3 releases:

  • The Breeders – “Cannonball”: Updated vocal gender to female
  • Disturbed – “The Infection”: Fixed drum fill placement during guitar solo, drum and guitar tweaks
  • Hoobastank – “The Reason”: Restored missing Easy/Medium/Hard charts on Pro Keys, guitar tweaks (important update)
  • Scratch21 – “Butterflies”: Added missing harmony phrases during outro
  • Scratch21 – “Untitled/Strangers”: Properly aligned backing tracks in second half of the “Strangers” portion; does not affect the single download of “Strangers”
  • Set Your Sails – “I’ll Drink to That”: Adjusted mix volume

See you next Friday!

What’s your favorite kind of New Year’s Eve party? Is it one where you do a little dance, or make a little love? Do you tell the DJ to play your favorite tune, and you know it’s okay? Or is it SHOTS, SHOTS, SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHSDJHWKEJWsdfdfsd? Whatever your party, we hope you’ll find time for a little Rock Band, with five more dance hits to build on last year’s hot pack. And if you’re still running high on energy from those, try some pop-punk hits from Scratch21, previously of RBN vocals fame!

It’s been a wonderful year, and we look forward to seeing all of your bright, smiling faces (that only sometimes post horrible vitriolic things on our forums) in 2015. It’s your downloads that keep us going — thanks for a great 2014!

Authors’ comments for this week’s songs:

  • “All That She Wants” – farottone writes, “A classic from the 90s, this reggae fueled pop hit is definitely fun to sing!”
  • “You Spin Me Round” – farottone writes, “One of the most iconic songs of the 80s has very entertaining bass and pro keys charts, and obviously is made for party singing.”
  • “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” – farottone writes, “The dance hit from Off The Wall will pose a challenge to singers while keeping it doable on all other instruments.”
  • “Maniac” – NL writes, “An 80’s classic that should go perfect for parties, as well as sporting great Keys, Vocals and a face melting Guitar solo.”
  • Scratch21 EP – Arcanon writes, “Scratch21 is the new pop punk project from Blake Swift (ShadyVox) and is one of the most diverse EPs of its kind, evoking a late 90s pop punk feel reminiscent of Blink-182 and similar bands.I’ve been working with Blake since the RBN days, and he’s a big supporter of the customs scene. We were originally going to release “Sorry Jack” on RBN, but when that didn’t work, I approached him to clear a C3 release. Not only was he on board with that, but he gave me full multitracks to the entirety of the EP, sometimes as soon as a song was fully recorded! He even provided instructional videos on how to play “The Rhyme” so we could offer you Pro Guitar and Bass charts on that song!

This is a project that has been in the works for months, and we tried to time this as close as possible to the actual release of the EP, which was December 23, 2014. If you would like to support Blake and his project, the album’s out on Bandcamp and many other digital music stores now! Also make sure to check out “Wha-Chow Theme” on the RBN store and “I’ll Drink to That” in the C3 database, both featuring Blake’s (credited as ShadyVox) vocals!

I hope you all enjoy this release. Please make sure to send your thanks to Blake for allowing this to be a thing (and for making the music!), and also send thanks to PikminGuts92 for authoring “The Rhyme” on Pro Guitar and Bass!

    Happy New Year!”

  • “Sorry Jack” – Arcanon writes, “The first single and most well-known song from the EP about a loser who just can’t win at love. It missed out on the RBN boat, but you now get it here on C3!”
  • “The Rhyme” – Arcanon writes, “This is a very personal song that anyone who’s ever been bullied can relate to. Features a spoken word section written and performed by Shane Koyczan.”
  • “Butterflies” – Arcanon writes, “A very fast, very pop punk, very Blink-like track that will give drummers and vocalists a hell of a time.”
  • “Untitled” – Arcanon writes, “This song needs no title. Its rebellious lyrics, powerful guitar, active bass and intense drums are enough to get the point across.”
  • “Strangers” – Arcanon writes, “An amazing duet featuring the talented voice actress and singer Eileen Montgomery, this is a great choice to sing with the significant other and an excellent closer to the EP.”

See you next year (and next Friday!)

The Twelve Days of Customs 2014, Day Twelve

I should probably write something, huh?

Hi, everyone! You had to read my blurb last year, and you have to put up with my copy writing every week as it is, so I’ll keep it short. I don’t have any particularly  inspiring or interesting Rock Band stories from this year. My Rock Band experience has largely evolved into this very community — authoring songs to keep the legacy alive, and getting the warm fuzzies when people play them. I still play on occasion, of course, but the role of creator and administrator takes up most of my time.

Ever wondered what goes into a weekly release? After making sure all of the songs are ready to go, I grab all of them from the server, extract their metadata, and load it into the database one song at a time, adding the download links and tweaking other things as I go. I write the blog post, adding all of the images from the C3 CON Tools Visualizer, and collecting any comments that the authors wrote. Then I manually add each song to our bug tracker database, because I still haven’t written a  simple script to populate it for me, and write the forum announcement with the links to everything. Then it’s a matter of hooking up the video prepared by the hard-working Lowlander, and a script mostly takes care of the actual launch on Friday mornings. Mostly. There’s usually a bit of scurrying around at the last minute, but still, there is A System. I hope that you’ll continue to enjoy our weekly releases and my sometimes-goofy blog posts!

The Twelve Days of Customs was originally envisioned as a way for authors to give a little extra to the players, and I’ve tried to embody that ideal with this year’s song. I’ve dreamed of a time when Rock Band represented every last significant band and artist in the history of rock music, and to that end, I’m happy to present our first Prince song. Now, I know it’s not from Purple Rain, and it’s not “1999”, and it’s not “Raspberry Beret”, but “Kiss” is a landmark Prince song that was coincidentally much more authorable than “When Doves Cry” or “Let’s Go Crazy”. This song is mostly for vocalists, but there’s a great guitar solo in there, too. I’m not really a huge Prince fan (though I’m far from a hater), but it was worth it to fill this hole in our song lists. Just don’t ask me to do the rest of his big singles. :)

Happy holidays to you and yours! Please travel safely, rock responsibly, and join us in 2015 for another year of C3.

sageamagoo writes:

Hello! This is sageamagoo, resident pro keys enthusiast here at C3. Rock Band has been a huge part of my life since it came out in 2007. It’s always been looked at as the go-to party game and has something for everyone to enjoy. But more importantly, it introduced me to some of my now-favourite artists (Faith No More, Poni Hoax, The Flaming Lips, Queens of the Stone Age, Dream Theater, Modest Mouse, Phish, Spacehog, etc.) Despite this, the game wouldn’t mean nearly as much to me if it weren’t for one thing:

Pro mode.

I already had a good background in piano when Rock Band 3 came out, so I was excited to see how well I’d do in the game. I let it boot up, tried Imagine on Expert, and failed out. What was this weird interface? It was nothing like sheet music. Why do the notes go so fast? Why can’t I react in time? You mean I have to hit four notes at the same time, with less than a second’s notice? Needless to say, I was a bit put out—but then I thought,

“If I had to learn this song on an actual piano, I’m sure it wouldn’t be that bad…”

So I went back to the beginning and worked my way up. After some attempts, I could work through the simplest of songs, and as I practiced more it became an exciting challenge, trying to better yourself and get through each song with a good score. There was just so much depth. Even at 2-dot difficulty things weren’t easy, and there were another 4 tiers to go, each exponentially harder than the last. All of a sudden, there was this weird revelation. This fun party game had grown into something much more meaningful. The fact that I could essentially play a fully functioning instrument in a music game turned Rock Band 3 into the greatest game I’d ever played.

Fast forward a few years, and I discover this group called C3. I had heard of custom songs before, but the videos I saw on YouTube showcasing old Guitar Hero customs looked really bad. C3 was different. C3 had people dedicated to making their songs as accurate as possible, and they had a thriving community where you too could learn how to put your favourite songs in the game.

So here I am, finally, with my first official custom. Crystalised by The xx is a great entry-level song that’s both easy and fun to play—and it has pro! I thought it fitting for my first custom to include something so dear to my heart, and this song is perfect for beginners who are picking up a pro instrument for the first time.

I’d like to thank Espher for his work on the Rock Band Harmonies Project, and for helping me through my first Pro Keys upgrades. He inspired me to take the plunge into upgrades and customs, and gave me deadlines I tried hard to follow. Without his help, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I’d also like to thank StackOverflow0x for his hard work bringing customs to Wii users. I started out on the Wii, and it’s because of him I was able to play customs in the first place.

Also, I’d like to give a huge shoutout to TrojanNemo, who brought us all the software the authors use on a daily basis. His work revolutionized the customs-making process, and helped make C3 what it is today.

And lastly, one final shoutout to Farottone for being the charting powerhouse he is. At over 300 customs, it’s hard to believe he has time to sleep, let alone be such an active and integral part of our community. I mean, did you see that Genesis release? Crazy. His work is an inspiration to us all.

(Remember, this is just a reveal; all of the songs will be released together tomorrow, December 25. See you then for the release post!)
